AIM
Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Martin Centre for Appliable Linguistics is an internationally oriented research center focusing on systemic functional linguistics (hereafter SFL) and its applications. It aims to foster the dialectic of theory and practice that M A K Halliday has envisioned as 'appliable linguistics'.
GOAL
The Martin Centre's principal research foci include academic discourse, forensic linguistics, language typology, translation studies and corpus linguistics – research highlighted in a dedicated forum focusing on one of these areas each year.
Alongside this research, the Centre conducts intensive training courses in systemic functional linguistics and symposia for PhD research students. A selection of papers presented at these symposia are published annually in a dedicated e-journal edited by Centre staff or the Journal of Contemporary Foreign Language Studies.
