The CSSCI Paper Writing and Publishing Workshop (Phase I) of the Graduate Academic Training Camp of SFL, SJTU Successfully Held

The School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University held “ CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index) Paper Writing and Publishing Workshop" of the graduate academic training camp, aiming to further stimulate the research vitality of graduate students, improve their research ability and thesis quality, and advocate the publication of thesis in China. On the evening of May 27th, the first lecture of the workshop was successfully held on the cloud, with more than 100 teachers and students attending online. This event was hosted by Lin Yi, Ph.D. student of grade 2019. 


Chang Hui, Dean of School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University attended and delivered the opening speech. He said the workshop aimed to build an academic platform to improve research ability, improve writing skills and enhance communication between teachers and students. He encouraged students to conform to the development of the Times, lay great emphasis on paper writing and publication, and maintain a down-to-earth and rigorous research attitude. To create a richer academic environment for teachers and students, three academic activities were planned in this training camp and there will also be workshops on writing and publishing international journal articles, as well as workshops on EYE movement, EEG, R and Python in the future. 
Prof. Wu Shiyu, Prof. Zhu Yifan and Prof. Shang Biwu from the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University were invited to share their experiences in writing and publishing CSSCI papers from the three perspectives of linguistics, translation studies and foreign literature.

 

 


Professor Wu shiyu expressed his unique views by sharing his personal experience and valuable practices from three dimensions of “why, where and how to publish”. According to him, academic papers reflected the comprehensive ability of a researcher, whose rigorous academic attitude, smooth language logic, solid academic training, in-depth professional knowledge, and rich early-days’ accumulation lay the foundation of a good academic paper. He also emphasized on the importance of “selecting topics”, while at the same time encouraging young researchers to expand their academic vision and look to interdisciplinary research journals. Finally, Professor Wu urged young researchers to pursue a down-to-earth academic work style and also maintain academic confidence.

 


Professor Zhu Yifan shared her valuable experiences about the topics and approaches of publishing CSSCI translation papers by sorting out the research directions of the National Social Sciences Project on Translation studies and the hot spots and trends of translation studies at home and abroad. She pointed out that translation researchers should pay attention to both theoretical and applied dimensions. They should not only aim at the international frontier theory, but also pay attention to the trend of China’s social sciences projects. Attention should be paid not only to the characteristics of each journal, but also to the shifts of domestic and international research hotspots. Combining with her work experience as a paper reviewer, Professor Zhu Yifan passed on some practical experiences on how to revise papers to the participants, suggesting that junior students should integrate their research with their term papers.

 

 
Professor Shang Biwu shared his experience of research innovation and academic paper writing of foreign literature researchers with humorous language and vivid and interesting examples. Quoting Max Weber's lecture at the University of Munich a century ago, he pointed out that literary researchers should "take academic work as their career". First of all, they should read extensively and write frequently, so as to drive qualitative change with quantitative change and then build up academic confidence. In the face of writing difficulties, the first step was to clarify the research direction, establish expert awareness, and then revise repeatedly with more academic exchanges, so as to achieve excellence. Finally, Professor Shang Biwu encouraged young scholars from the perspective of a reviewer and put forward some valuable suggestions.

During the question-and-answer session, SFL students asked questions eagerly. Three teachers gave insightful answers to questions such as how the differences in research status quo at home and abroad affected the topic selection and writing, how to revise rejected papers efficiently, and how to reconcile theoretical understanding with data processing. The atmosphere of this lecture was active and the response was warm, which provided important reference and help for the young researchers in SFL to have an integral grasp of thesis writing.
