The First SJTU Simulated International Academic Conference Communication Contest for Doctoral Students Successfully Held
On the afternoon of December 15, 2021, the first Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) simulated international academic conference communication conteset for doctoral students with the theme of "Learn Academic English, Tell Chinese Academic Stories", which was jointly hosted by the School of Foreign Languages(SFL) and Graduate School of SJTU, was successfully held in Room 121 of Chen Ruiqiu Building on Minhang Campus. Gui Lin, Vice Dean of Graduate School of SJTU, and Li Hongde, Director of Postgraduate College English Division of SFL, and Yang Xiaohong, its Deputy Director, attended the contest.
The contest was organized by the SFL’s Postgraduate College English Division. Li Hongde,its director, gave an opening speech and introduced the contest and the rules. Doctoral students from 16 colleges and departments of the university participated in the event, covering a wide range of disciplines ranging from science, engineering, agriculture, medicine to humanities and social sciences.

The contest was divided into two sessions: personal presentation and Q&A. Firstly, the participants made a five-minute presentation on their completed scientific research in their own specialties and research directions, and then answered the questions from the judges within two minutes. Most of the participants' research was problem-oriented, and they used their professional knowledge to tell their research stories to a mixed audience from different disciplines. The contestants' presentations were clear and logical, and the judges' questions were gentle or tricky, inspiring or critical. The comtest was very interactive with a relaxed and lively atmosphere of communication.

After fierce competition, five contestants, including Chen Ao, Yuan Shu, Dong Shilong, Wang Chaofan and Tian Xinhe, won the third prize. Tao Yu, Wang Guoxu and Fan Yuanyuan won the second prize. Li You from Kaiyuan Law School won the first prize.

Ms. Guilin gave a closing speech. On behalf of Graduate School, she warmly congratulated the students for their excellent achievements and expressed her gratitude to the faculty of Postgraduate College English Division who diligently prepared and organized the contest. She pointed out that the students should fully cultivate themselves to improve their abilities, lay a solid foundation for international exchange after the epidemic, and be fully prepared to tell Chinese academic stories in the international academic arena.

It is known that the second academic English speech contest for master students and the third academic English speech contest for doctoral students were respectively held on November 24 and December 1. As an organic extension of SFL’s academic English course system, this series of extra-curricular activity platform aimed to improve master's and doctoral students' English communication awareness and ability.
