The event of “Promoting Handcraft Culture by DIY Koujin Handbag-Making” , which was organized by the Trade Union of School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, took place at noon on November 5, 2020 in Room 107 of Yangyongman Building and attracted more than 50 faculty and staff members. 

So-called Koujin Handbag, or literally translated as “Opening-Gold Handbag”, appeared frequently in the old movies of Shanghai, where Koujin Handbag enjoyed great popularity and was seen as a symbol of elegance and style. Prized by fashion-conscious ladies as an essential accessory to go with Chi-pao,（or cheongsam, a traditional form of Chinese dress for women characterized by its high collar, tight fitting and high slits）, Koujin Handbag had dual purposes: to carry perfume and handkerchiefs around, and to showcase one’s unique taste.

In recent years, the ancient art of Koujin handbag-making has regained momentum when people come to realize that doing something crafty can be quite relaxing and soothing. What’s more, learning to DIY a handbag with colleagues can be great fun.

Following the step-by-step instruction from a tutor, participants tried their hands at handbag-making. To start, they needed to find a pattern that they liked, and then picked out fabric, thread, and any accessories that they may need. It was important to remember to choose a thread that matched and was strong enough to hold together the fabric that was chosen. Using a special sheer, they cut the pieces according to the pattern, and tried to make sure that everything lined up evenly. Next, they attached any pockets to the lining, trimming off any excess fabric, and sew the handbag together. The last step was to hem any exposed edges, attach the strap, or any decorative touches that can add personality and interest.

“Doing something crafty is great fun; it’s a way to take care of ourselves and to relax.” said  one teacher.

An hour later, colorful handbags, the symbol of fashion and elegance, were placed on a long desk, so that people can take shots of them to show off on Wechat.

With their handbags arranged in a neat, orderly row, a dozen women teachers posed before the camera, beaming with delight.

Hard-working hands can always create beauty and fun in this world. Handbag-making has this magic, and some newly-made “Koujin Handbags” prove that.
